The Sri Vijaya Saugatha Vidyalaya Pirivena of Panadura (Study centre for Buddhist monks) is a renowned academic institution which has earned a name and fame for its indispensable contribution to dissemination of Buddha's teachings, revival of Buddhist education, social welfare and cultural upliftment. Though it had taken root as a fully fledged Buddhist temple, it has eventually emerged as a dignified academic institution. This institution was established in 1923 by the late venerable Pandit Walane Wijayananda Adikarana Nayaka Thero, who was an eminent Buddhist dignity of that time.

The illustrious and erudite scholars who graced this institution since its inception were well versed in the Buddhist doctrine and oriental languages and literature. With the auspices and able guidance of these scholars, this institution became the abode for the succession of well—accomplished Buddhist monks who were instrumental in all national, religious, social and cultural activities of the people in the area.

The next chief incumbent of the institution, the late prelate Right Reverend Madupitiye Sri Medhananda Adikarana Nayaka Thero who rendeved a yeoman service to the sasana was an eloquent preacher of the Dhamma. He had won the hearts of all the people including non—buddhists in the island through his many captivatingly simple and savoury Dhamma sermons over the radio.

The present chief incumbent venerable panadure vijithananda Thero took the initiative to revive the past glory of the institution by reopening the pirivena which had been defunct for some time. He is deeply commited and is working conscientiously with firm determination to continue the many religious, academic, social and cultural services carried out by the institution on a wider scale. To ensure this, he has valiantly undertaken the formidable task of producing a generation of well—informed, disciplined and capable Buddhist monks. In view of this, venerable vijithananda has drawn up an action plan for developing the institution further by setting up a few affiliated bodies to execute different tasks effectively and efficiently. As a result the institution has grown in to a large organization having streamlined its activities through several functional divisions with more specific scopes of work.
